A young man was accused of stealing ₦2 million after allegedly breaking into someone's home. He was handcuffed and brutally tortured until he could barely see.
Throughout the ordeal, he repeatedly maintained his innocence, insisting he had nothing to do with the alleged crime. Instead of investigating further, the local vigilantes allegedly intensified the torture, hoping to force a confession.
Despite the pain, the young man stood his ground and said: "I swore to myself and my family that I am innocent. I would rather die than confess to a crime I know nothing about."
Later, CCTV footage from the house reportedly proved that he had no involvement in the alleged theft. He was innocent.
It's heartbreaking to think about what could have happened.
What if there had been no CCTV footage to clear his name?
What if he had died under torture before the truth came to light?
This is a sobering reminder that accusations are not proof of guilt, and justice should never be replaced with violence. Innocent lives can be destroyed when people are punished before the facts are established.
