I listened to the first lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria speak on how she gave out money for various intervention programmes. Now the problem is not the giving out of the money.

The challenge is for the money to get to the right people it was intended to get to. A lot of this money ends up being diverted by aides. If at all it gets to the intended beneficiaries, it will definitely be 10% to 20% of the initial sum allocated to each beneficiary.

One way to curb this is to put a system in place where there is a first-hand contact with the beneficiaries and a public declaration on how much each stands to get at the end of the day for any initiative. There should also be a monitoring and evaluation system in place to make sure the beneficiaries actually use the money for its intended purpose.
