Severe Acute Malnutrition is increasing, especially under-5 children.
Kwashiorkor which is a type of undernutrition is characterized by severe protein deficiency.
It's saddening to see children who are malnourished majorly as a result of hunger-poverty, ignorance, lack of parental nutrition education etc.
Children who are majorly fed starchy foods are at risk of kwashiorkor.
No egg, no meat, no beans, fish, no crayfish, no bonga fish, no yoghurt, no milk or even soyabean, none at all in their food.
It's assumed the children are fed but the food is not nutrient dense.
Even in this phase of tough economy, we can still combine little resources to make something adequate.
Instead of giving white rice and stew with no meat, combine rice and beans instead.
When there's no money for meat or fish for cooking, use crayfish, bonga fish or any other affordable dry fish.
Boiled eggs are a good alternative too.
They all contain good amount of protein.
When children lack protein in their food, overtime the child is undernourished and has kwashiorkor with the presence of oedema (swelling).
This swelling occurs due to complex changes in the body, including inadequate nutrient intake and reduced ability to maintain normal fluid balance.
There's no doubt, protein is very important in the children's food.
To be continued....
