Eric Yuan — The Man Who Got Rejected Into Billions
Born in China in 1970, Yuan was inspired by long train rides to visit his girlfriend. He dreamed of technology that could connect people without the distance.
He applied for a U.S. visa eight times before finally getting it on the ninth attempt. He then joined WebEx, rose to VP of Engineering, and watched it get acquired by Cisco for $3.2 billion.
But he was unhappy. Customers hated the product. He saw a better way.
At 41, he left Cisco to build Zoom. Investors laughed. The market was “too crowded.” He was turned down 36 times. He borrowed from friends and family and launched anyway in 2013.
Six years of quiet, profitable growth. Then COVID hit. Zoom went from 10 million to 200 million daily users almost overnight. Its market cap surpassed $140 billion, more than IBM.
Eight visa rejections. Thirty-six investor rejections. A leap of faith at 41.
Classic late bloomer.
