Your Job Was Banded Using Six Factors. Almost Nobody Asks Which Ones Were Scored Low.
Every NHS role, before it's ever advertised, goes through the Job Evaluation Scheme — a structured scoring process that determines its Agenda for Change band. Most candidates never look past the band number itself.
Understanding the six factors behind it is exactly the kind of detail that turns a vague sense of being underpaid into a properly evidenced case for review.
The factors include things like knowledge and skills required, the level of analytical and judgement-based decision-making the role demands, the level of responsibility for patient care, responsibility for supervising or managing others, and the physical, mental and emotional demands of the role, among others.
Every NHS role gets matched against a national job profile based on how it scores across these factors, and that score is what sets the band.
Here's why this matters practically, especially for international staff.
If your actual day-to-day responsibilities have grown since you were originally banded — more supervisory responsibility, more complex decision-making, more autonomous practice — but your job description was never formally updated to reflect that, you may genuinely be working above your banded level without realising there's a structured, legitimate process to request a re-evaluation.
This isn't about complaining that you deserve more money in the abstract. It's about recognising that Agenda for Change banding is meant to track actual job content, and when job content changes substantially without the banding being reviewed, there's a formal mechanism — usually starting with your line manager and a job description review — to request that re-evaluation properly.
Most people never raise this because they don't know the mechanism exists. Now you do.
DM me "REBAND" and I'll send you a plain-language guide to how this process actually works.
