I Called The Doctor! That's Not An Answer. Here's What The Panel Actually Wants.
"Tell us about a time you managed a deteriorating patient."
This question gets asked in almost every clinical interview across every profession, and a huge number of candidates answer it as a single sentence: I noticed they were unwell, I called for help, help arrived. That's not a story.
That's an outcome with no visible process behind it — and the panel cannot score what they can't see.
What they're actually assessing is your structured clinical reasoning under pressure, end to end.
A 4 answer walks through five specific stages, clearly.
What you actually noticed first — specific signs, not "they didn't look right."
How you assessed it — a structured approach, NEWS2 scoring or equivalent, ABCDE if relevant to your scope.
What immediate action you took yourself, within your competence, before escalating.
How you escalated — specifically, using a structured handover format like SBAR, not just "I told someone."
And what happened afterward, including the clinical outcome and anything you reflected on or changed in your own practice as a result.
Each of those five stages is a separate thing the panel is listening for. Skip straight from "I noticed" to "I called the doctor" and you've given them almost nothing to score, even if your actual clinical handling in the moment was genuinely excellent.
This is the most common gap I see in interview prep across every profession: candidates who handled a real clinical situation brilliantly, and then describe it so briefly in the interview that none of that competence is actually visible to the people scoring them.
