Inspiring Mathematicians 25: Sharaf al-Din al-Tusi

Sharaf al-Din al-Tusi (c. 1135–1213) was a pioneering Persian mathematician and astronomer whose work marked a major advance in algebra.

In his masterpiece Treatise on Equations, he systematically studied cubic equations, classified their different forms, and developed geometric methods for finding their solutions.

Remarkably, his analysis of polynomial equations involved ideas resembling the modern concept of functions and the search for maxima, making him one of the earliest mathematicians to move toward analytical methods later associated with calculus.

His contributions built upon the algebraic tradition of Muhammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi and Omar Khayyam, helping to establish medieval Islamic mathematics as a crucial bridge between ancient and modern mathematical thought.
