🚨 Giving Governors the Power to Appoint State Police Commissioners Could Be a Dangerous Mistake Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu as Nigeria just pass the Nigeria Police Force State Police bill, then we must get one thing right from the beginning:

⚠️ The Governor should not have the power to appoint the State Police Commissioner.

Why?

Because the police must serve the people, not politicians.

Let’s think about it carefully πŸ‘‡

πŸ“Œ A governor can have political opponents
πŸ“Œ A governor can have personal interests to protect
πŸ“Œ A governor can be involved in election-related disputes
πŸ“Œ A governor can be tempted to use security agencies to silence critics

πŸ’” The danger is obvious:

πŸ‘‰ Opposition voices may be intimidated
πŸ‘‰ Political rivals may be unfairly targeted
πŸ‘‰ Citizens may lose confidence in the police
πŸ‘‰ The police could become an extension of politics instead of justice

And once people stop trusting the police, security itself begins to suffer.

πŸ’‘ A better solution:

Create a Council of Police Elders in every state.

This council could consist of:

βœ”οΈ Retired Commissioners of Police
βœ”οΈ Retired Assistant Inspectors General of Police
βœ”οΈ Respected security experts
βœ”οΈ Representatives of the judiciary
βœ”οΈ Distinguished citizens with proven integrity

Their responsibility would be simple:

πŸ‘‰ Screen candidates
πŸ‘‰ Assess competence and integrity
πŸ‘‰ Recommend the best officer based on merit, not politics

πŸ“’ What are the advantages?

βœ… Greater independence of the police

βœ… Reduced political interference

βœ… Better professionalism

βœ… More public trust

βœ… Stronger accountability

βœ… Better protection of citizens' rights

⚠️ The purpose of State Police should be to fight criminals, kidnappers, bandits, and violent offendersβ€”not political opponents.

πŸ™ Mr. President and Distinguished Members of the Senate, if State Police becomes a reality, please ensure that the appointment process remains independent and free from political control.

Nigeria cannot afford to create a security institution that answers to politicians instead of the law.

πŸ’¬ Do you agree that State Police Commissioners should be appointed by an independent Council of Police Elders rather than governors?

πŸ‘‡ If you agree, share this post.

A simple share can help push a national conversation that may strengthen democracy, improve security, and protect the rights of future generations.
