π¨ Giving Governors the Power to Appoint State Police Commissioners Could Be a Dangerous Mistake Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu as Nigeria just pass the Nigeria Police Force State Police bill, then we must get one thing right from the beginning:
β οΈ The Governor should not have the power to appoint the State Police Commissioner.
Why?
Because the police must serve the people, not politicians.
Letβs think about it carefully π
π A governor can have political opponents
π A governor can have personal interests to protect
π A governor can be involved in election-related disputes
π A governor can be tempted to use security agencies to silence critics
π The danger is obvious:
π Opposition voices may be intimidated
π Political rivals may be unfairly targeted
π Citizens may lose confidence in the police
π The police could become an extension of politics instead of justice
And once people stop trusting the police, security itself begins to suffer.
π‘ A better solution:
Create a Council of Police Elders in every state.
This council could consist of:
βοΈ Retired Commissioners of Police
βοΈ Retired Assistant Inspectors General of Police
βοΈ Respected security experts
βοΈ Representatives of the judiciary
βοΈ Distinguished citizens with proven integrity
Their responsibility would be simple:
π Screen candidates
π Assess competence and integrity
π Recommend the best officer based on merit, not politics
π’ What are the advantages?
β
Greater independence of the police
β
Reduced political interference
β
Better professionalism
β
More public trust
β
Stronger accountability
β
Better protection of citizens' rights
β οΈ The purpose of State Police should be to fight criminals, kidnappers, bandits, and violent offendersβnot political opponents.
π Mr. President and Distinguished Members of the Senate, if State Police becomes a reality, please ensure that the appointment process remains independent and free from political control.
Nigeria cannot afford to create a security institution that answers to politicians instead of the law.
π¬ Do you agree that State Police Commissioners should be appointed by an independent Council of Police Elders rather than governors?
π If you agree, share this post.
A simple share can help push a national conversation that may strengthen democracy, improve security, and protect the rights of future generations.
