NNEKA'S DIARY XXIX

The night before the wedding, I didn't sleep.

Not because I was nervous. Not because I was having second thoughts. Because Grace kept snoring.

We had decided to spend the night together — our last night before I became someone's wife. She had promised to be calm and peaceful. She lied.

Around 2 a.m., I gave up on sleep and sat by the window, staring at the quiet street.

My phone buzzed.

Kunle: Are you awake?

Me: Yes. Grace is snoring like a generator.

Kunle: I can't sleep either. Philip is here. He keeps giving me marriage advice I didn't ask for.

Me: Like what?

Kunle: "Never go to bed angry." "Always let her win." "The wife is always right."

Me: I like Philip. He's wise.

Kunle: You would.

I smiled in the dark.

Me: Are you scared?

Kunle: Terrified. Not of you but of messing this up.

Me: You won't.

Kunle: Promise me something.

Me: Anything.

Kunle: If I ever become the man I was at that party — the one who looked at another woman while married — you will tell me. You will not tolerate it. You will fight for us. But you will not accept disrespect.

I read his words twice.

Me: I promise. And if I ever become a woman who takes you for granted, you tell me too.

Kunle: Deal.

Me: Go to sleep. We have a big day tomorrow.

Kunle: You first.

Me: You first.

He eventually hung up.

I didn't sleep. But I felt peaceful.
