The word truly is where this hadith lands its weight.
"None of you truly believes until he loves for his brother what he loves for himself." (Bukhari)
Not until you intellectually affirm the creed. Until you love for your brother what you love for yourself.
Most people consider themselves broadly well-wishing toward others. But loving for someone else the specific thing you want for yourself, the recognition you are hoping for, the good news you are waiting for, the opportunity you are praying for, that is a different test entirely.
Ibn Rajab said this hadith contains a huge principle. Most people discover whether they actually meet it in the moments they would most prefer not to be tested, when someone else receives what they were hoping for. May Allah purify our hearts of what we do not see in ourselves.
