Good morning, Arise.
Regarding the issue of state police, I do not think I support it. If we can properly maintain and strengthen the existing federal police system, that would be the safest option.
As we all remember, when SARS existed, there were many issues and complaints from citizens. Even today, we still experience challenges with some law enforcement agencies, including LASTMA in Lagos and other uniformed personnel.
Therefore, I am concerned about introducing state police. Where are we heading if we cannot fully address the problems within the current system? I prefer a stronger federal police structure. The government can recruit more police officers and provide better training and supervision.
In some cases, officers tend to show favoritism toward people from their own state or community, which could become a bigger issue under a state police system. Even among some security agencies today, there are concerns about cooperation and mutual respect.
My suggestion is that if Nigeria needs more security personnel, the government should recruit more police officers and strengthen other security groups such as forest guards and vigilante organizations.
Thank you.
