We keep hearing about kidnappings in Nigeria - families shattered, communities paralyzed. And we pray. We always pray.

But prayers aren't a security strategy.

Here's the hard question I keep coming back to:

If the government can't or won't sufficiently protect rural communities, should it not arm local vigilantes better or even throw open individuals owning guns for self-protection? Or does that just start an arms race we may not be able to control or, better still, does it give room for a balance of power?

Because right now, the kidnappers have all the power - and the victims have none. That's not safety. That's a hunting ground.

I don't know the answer. But I know “pray and wait” isn't one.

What do you think - is arming communities/individuals a solution, or a disaster waiting to happen?
