I recently learned that airline operators in Nigeria pay as many as 55 different taxes and charges, while about 77% of every ticket fare does not even go to the airline. It's no surprise that Nigeria has been ranked among the most difficult places in the world to set up and run an airline.
To make matters worse, aviation fuel sells for over ₦3,000 per litre despite Nigeria being an oil-producing and refining nation. With operating costs this high, air travel is steadily becoming a luxury reserved for the wealthy, while the average Nigerian is being priced out of the skies.
