On the Debate of State Police in Nigeria
The idea of allowing state governments to establish their own police forces is, in my view, not the right path for Nigeria. We are all witnesses to how power is often abused in our country. Granting governors the authority to control a state police force will almost certainly lead to misuse, victimization, and, ultimately, spell doom for the nation.
Instead of creating fragmented policing structures, what Nigeria needs is a total overhaul of the existing Nigerian Police Force. The police should serve the people, not as bodyguards for the political class and their families. If VIP protection is necessary, then a separate secret service unit should be created specifically for that purpose.
More importantly, the welfare of our police officers must be prioritized. The billions of naira allocated to governors as “security votes” should be transparently redirected to fund the police—ensuring proper salaries, training, and benefits. Alongside this, officers should be provided with modern equipment, reliable vehicles, and advanced technology to effectively combat crime and maintain public order.
A strong, professional, and well-resourced national police force is the solution—not state-controlled security outfits that will only deepen division and abuse.
