During Alhaji Shehu Shagari's 2nd Republic presidency his all powerful minister of transport, Umaru Dikko, was asked by journalists what the government was doing to ameliorate the hunger in the country due to the severe economic challenges. He simply quipped that people hadn't been seen eating from the dustbin, so it wasn't true people lacked food.

Yesterday presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga threaded the same ignominious path. When reminded by AriseNews anchor Charles Aniagolu of the pervasive hunger in the land he simply retorted "...I don't see the level of hunger people are talking about..." Of course how could anyone see hungry people in the bubble that the Presidential Villa is?

A one time French 1st lady, Marie Antoinette, was equally alleged to have said "Let them eat cake!" when she was told most people couldn't afford bread anymore. Yes, she didn't even know that cake was a luxury item. The hungry just wanted ordinary bread, a staple then in France. I wonder how many people still eat bread in Nigeria.

This is how disconnected people in power are from reality. The system provides them with everything for free so they're unable to comprehend lack and poverty.
