OPEN LETTER TO THE CHAIRMAN OF INEC ON THE EKITI GOVERNORSHIP ELECTION

Subject: Deep Concern Over the Conduct of the Ekiti Governorship Election

Dear Mr. Chairman,

I write this open letter with deep concern and disappointment over the conduct of the Ekiti Governorship election under your leadership. As this is one of the first major governorship elections during your tenure as Chairman of INEC, many Nigerians expected a clear demonstration of competence, preparedness, transparency, and commitment to electoral integrity. Sadly, what played out in Ekiti has raised serious questions about the readiness of INEC under your watch.

Reports and widespread concerns about vote buying, electoral manipulation, rigging, and the alteration of figures have once again damaged public confidence in Nigeria’s democratic process. This is not the kind of election that should inspire hope in the people. Instead, it has created fear, suspicion, and distrust.

An election is supposed to be the true expression of the will of the people, not a contest decided by money, intimidation, manipulation, and backdoor arrangements. When the electoral process is compromised, democracy itself is wounded. The people of Ekiti deserved a free, fair, and credible election, not one overshadowed by allegations of irregularities and misconduct.

Mr. Chairman, this development does not speak well of INEC at all. If this is the standard Nigerians are seeing in a governorship election at the beginning of your tenure, then it naturally raises serious concerns about what the country should expect in the 2027 presidential election. Nigerians cannot afford to enter such a crucial national election with doubts about whether INEC is prepared, impartial, and capable of protecting the sanctity of the ballot.

The Ekiti election should have been an opportunity for you and your Commission to reassure Nigerians that the painful history of electoral malpractice is behind us. Instead, it has unfortunately deepened public anxiety about the future of our democracy.

I therefore urge you to take these concerns seriously and act decisively. INEC must rise above excuses and demonstrate that it has the courage and capacity to conduct elections that are credible, transparent, and acceptable to the people. Nigerians deserve an electoral body that is firm against vote buying, uncompromising against manipulation, and determined to ensure that every vote truly counts.

The future of our democracy depends heavily on the integrity of our electoral process. INEC must not fail Nigeria.
