The allegations are deeply disturbing. The husband of the victim, Malama Ummulkhairi, has stated that his wife had sought refuge at the police station after being attacked by a mob but was allegedly later returned to the attackers. An eyewitness account goes further, claiming that a Divisional Police Officer took the woman by the hand out of the station gate and towards the mob, despite warnings that she would be k!11ed.

If these accounts are accurate, this was not a failure of procedure; it was a deliberate act. A DPO is not just any officer; they are the commanding officer of a station, expected to be the bulwark against lawlessness. To allegedly hand a vulnerable person over to a mob is to abandon the very principles of policing and actively participate in a crime. This officer has betrayed his country and the people he swore to protect.

⚖️ THE IMPERATIVE FOR DECISIVE ACTION

The gravity of this situation demands a response that goes beyond a mere transfer or a slap on the wrist. Anything less would be a tacit endorsement of such behavior and would further erode public trust in the Nigeria Police Force. The following actions are non-negotiable to forestall a future occurrence:

1. IMMEDIATE SUSPENSION AND INVESTIGATION: DPO Abdullahi Ibrahim Fakai must be suspended from duty immediately to allow for a thorough, transparent, and independent investigation.

2. CR!M!NAL PROSECUTION: If the allegations are proven, he must face cr!m!nal charges, as handing a person over to a mob is a criminal act. The Administration of Criminal Justice Act explicitly prohibits officers from handing over suspects to mobs.

3. SEVERE DISCIPLINARY ACTION: Within the police force, he should face the most severe disciplinary consequences. Demotion or outright dismissal would be appropriate, as the police have a clear precedent for dismissing officers for grave misconduct. A mere redeployment, as has happened in other cases of misconduct, would be seen as a failure of justice.

The Nigeria Police Force must send a clear and unequivocal message that such behavior will not be tolerated. The IGP's prompt action in ordering an investigation is a commendable first step. However, the world is watching to see if this leads to tangible justice, or if it becomes another case of impunity.

May the soul of the departed continue to rest in peace. Her death must not be in vain. It must serve as a catalyst for meaningful reform and accountability within the police force.
