The CV That Had Been Submitted To Forty Roles. Not One Interview. Here's What Actually Changed.

A client came to me after six months of applying. Forty applications. The same CV, largely unchanged, sent across multiple roles, multiple Trusts, multiple bands.

Not one interview.

I want to share what we found, and what changed, because I think it illustrates something more useful than any framework post this week.

The CV was not badly written in an absolute sense. It was clearly the work of someone intelligent and professional. But it had been written once, as a general document, and then submitted forty times with minimal adaptation to the specific role, the specific person specification, or the specific language the Trust was using in that particular advert.

Every application was essentially making the same case, regardless of whether that case was the right one for the specific opportunity.

After working together on a proper rebuild — one specific role, one specific person specification, criterion mapped explicitly, language aligned to what the panel was scoring against — the very next application got shortlisted.

I share this not to claim credit for it, but because I think it reflects something genuinely important: the underlying capability was always there. The issue was never whether this person was good enough.

It was whether the document in front of a panel actually showed that in the terms that panel was scoring against.

What I do is help people understand the gap between those two things — and work through it together, with the candidate's own experience and their own words at the centre.

If you've been applying for months and getting nothing back, it's worth asking whether the document you're sending is actually doing what you need it to do.
