Before You Apply To Any Sponsored NHS Role, There Is One Check You Should Know How To Do Yourself.

Again, I want to be clear from the start: what I'm sharing here is educational information about a publicly available resource — not immigration advice, and not a substitute for proper qualified guidance on your specific visa situation.

The UK Visas and Immigration sponsor register is a free, publicly searchable database, maintained by the Home Office, that lists every organisation currently licensed to sponsor workers under the Skilled Worker and Health and Care Worker routes in the UK. It's available on the gov.uk website and anyone can search it at any time.

Why this matters for international candidates: an employer has to be on this register, with an A-rating, to be able to assign a Certificate of Sponsorship for a new employee. An employer listed with a B-rating — which can happen for various compliance-related reasons — cannot assign new Certificates of Sponsorship until their rating is restored. An employer not found on the register at all cannot sponsor under these routes.

Knowing this, you have the ability to check any employer you're considering applying to, before you invest significant time and preparation into that application, to confirm whether they appear on the register and what their current status shows. This check takes approximately two minutes. The register updates regularly.

What you do with that information is entirely your decision to make. If an employer you're interested in doesn't appear, or appears with a status that concerns you, you might decide to seek clarification directly from the employer, to get qualified immigration advice, to weigh that uncertainty against other factors, or to focus your efforts elsewhere.

All of those are reasonable responses to the same information — what matters is that you're making whatever choice you make with accurate information rather than an assumption.

Comment "SHORTAGE" and I'll share the specific steps to run this check yourself on the government website.

Post 5 at 5pm closes Wednesday with a personal note.
