The Nigerian Consul General in South Africa has come under heavy criticism after urging stranded Nigerians to thank President Bola Tinubu for the Federal Government's efforts to evacuate them.

Addressing the stranded citizens, the Consul General said:

"I don't have a date to give today, but what you need to know is that it is at the top of the table. We are working on it, and you will be taken home. You need to trust your mission. I am not here to take questions; I am here to reassure you. Can you say, 'Thank you, Mr. President?' We see the good things you're doing, and we are only pleading with you to fast-track it. That is the message. Thank you, Mr. President."

However, the remarks were met with an emotional response from some stranded Nigerians, who questioned why they should thank the government.

"Thank you for what?" one Nigerian asked.

"Malawi is taking its people home. Zimbabwe is taking its people home. Mozambique is taking its people home. We were asked to leave our homes and come here for evacuation. Many people sold the little they had and gave up their rented apartments because they believed they would be returning to Nigeria.

"House rent in South Africa is paid monthly. Many informed their landlords they would not be renewing their rent, only to end up stranded here. Now we are being told to thank the Government of Nigeria. Thank President Tinubu for what?

"Women and children came out during winter because they were asked to do so, yet they have been left stranded with no hope while politicians in Nigeria continue arguing among themselves.

"If those in government cannot do the job, they should resign and allow people who can fix Nigeria to take over. If President Tinubu cannot fix Nigeria at home, how can he solve the problems facing Nigerians in the diaspora?

"He asked Nigerians to elect him so he could serve the country. He was elected, but we believe nothing is being done for us. We are stranded in South Africa while other African countries have already evacuated their citizens. So what exactly are we thanking the President for?"

The exchange has sparked widespread reactions online, with many Nigerians debating the Federal Government's handling of the evacuation process and the frustrations expressed by stranded citizens in South Africa.
