NNEKA'S DIARY XXVI
The Wednesday before our Saturday church wedding, we stood in a small registry office in Ikeja.
Just us. No crowd. No flowers. No elaborate decorations.
Just a room with beige walls, plastic chairs, and a government official who looked like he'd rather be anywhere else.
That Wednesday, I woke up at 5 AM. Not from nerves — from excitement.
Grace was already in my room, laying out my outfit. A simple cream-colored dress. Modest. Elegant.
"Sis, are you ready?" she asked.
"I've been ready for months."
"Then why are you shaking?"
I looked at my hands. She was right. They were trembling.
"I don't know," I admitted. "I'm not nervous about marrying him. I'm nervous about... I don't know. The finality of it? The paperwork? The fact that after today, I'll legally be Mrs. Kunle?"
Grace grinned. "You've been Mrs. Kunle in your heart for a long time. Today is just the government catching up."
I threw a pillow at her.
We arrived at 9 AM. Kunle was already there, standing by the entrance in a simple grey suit. No tie. Just crisp, clean, and calm.
When he saw me, his face broke into that smile I'd come to love — the one that reached his eyes.
"You look beautiful," he said.
"You look like you haven't slept," I said.
"Couldn't. Too excited," he said.
I laughed. "Same."
