NCDC REPORTS HIGHER LASSA FEVER DEATH RATE IN 2026

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention says Lassa fever is proving deadlier this year, with 214 deaths recorded so far and a fatality rate of 25 percent, up from 18.9 percent during the same period in 2025.

According to the NCDC, 23 states and 109 local government areas have reported confirmed cases in 2026, with Ondo, Bauchi, Taraba, Edo and Benue accounting for the majority of infections.

Health officials say young adults between the ages of 21 and 30 remain the most affected group. The agency is urging Nigerians to seek medical attention early and maintain good hygiene practices as efforts continue to contain the outbreak.
