Inspiring Mathematicians 22: Ibn al-Haytham

Ibn al-Haytham (965–1040 CE), known in the West as Alhazen, was one of the greatest scientists and mathematicians of the Islamic Golden Age.

Born in Basra and later active in Egypt, he made groundbreaking contributions to mathematics, optics, astronomy, and the scientific method.

In mathematics, he advanced geometry, number theory, and the study of conic sections, while his work in optics revolutionized understanding of vision and light.

His most famous book, Kitab al-Manazir (Book of Optics), emphasized observation, experimentation, and logical reasoning, helping to establish principles that would later become central to modern science.

Because of his rigorous approach to investigation and evidence, Ibn al-Haytham is often regarded as one of the earliest pioneers of the scientific method and a key bridge between ancient and modern scientific thought.
