A new report by the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP) and the Lightrock Energy Access Platform (LEAP) has revealed that Sub-Saharan Africa requires $15 billion in annual investment to achieve universal electricity access by 2035. With over 500 million people still lacking electricity, current funding of less than $2.5 billion per year falls far short of what is needed. The report highlights key barriers, including fragmented delivery systems, high financing costs, poor risk allocation and limited rural infrastructure. It calls for stronger public-private partnerships, innovative financing models, better risk-sharing mechanisms and long-term investment strategies focused on reliable service delivery. As Africa’s population continues to grow, experts warn that closing the energy gap is essential for economic growth, job creation and improved living standards.
