You're HCPC Registered. So Why Is Every NHS Application Coming Back With A Rejection?

This is one of the most common messages I receive, and I want to address it honestly rather than with a vague reassurance.

HCPC registration confirms one thing: you are legally authorised to practise your profession in the UK. That is genuinely significant.

It is not, however, what an NHS shortlisting panel uses to decide who gets an interview. Registration is the entry gate.

Everything that happens after that gate is determined by your application — and the two things are completely separate.

Here's the framework shortlisting panels typically work from, and where most rejected applications fall short:

First, specific evidence against each essential criterion. Not a general description of your competence — specific, evidenced examples that map directly onto what the person specification is asking for. "I have experience in X" is a claim. "During a specific situation, I did Y, which resulted in Z" is evidence. They score very differently.

Second, language alignment. If the person specification uses the phrase "patient-centred care," your answer should use that language, not a synonym you've substituted in because it sounds more natural to you. TRAC systems and human reviewers alike are looking for exact criterion matches.

Third, outcomes rather than duties. A supporting statement that lists everything you do at work doesn't score well. One that describes what changed, improved, or was prevented because of your specific involvement does.

Fourth, honest acknowledgment of gaps. A candidate who addresses a genuine gap head-on, with a clear learning plan, reads as far more credible than one who either ignores the gap or implies they don't have one.

Registration gets you eligible to apply. Evidence gets you shortlisted.
