A Call for Accountability and Urgent Leadership

The recent resignation of Keir Starmer, regardless of the political circumstances surrounding it, reinforces an important principle in democratic governance: leaders must be held accountable for the outcomes of their stewardship.

In Nigeria, families continue to endure the pain and uncertainty of insecurity. For over a month, reports of kidnapped children, students, and teachers have dominated national discourse, while communities across the country remain vulnerable to banditry, terrorism, and violent attacks. Parents have been left in anguish, schools have become symbols of fear rather than learning, and many citizens increasingly question whether enough is being done to protect lives and restore public confidence.

Leadership is ultimately measured not by promises made, but by the safety, security, and well-being of the people. When citizens can no longer travel freely, when children cannot attend school without fear, and when communities live under the constant threat of violence, serious questions must be asked about the effectiveness of those entrusted with power.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu must recognize the gravity of this moment. The continued kidnapping of students and teachers, persistent insecurity, and the loss of public trust demand more than statements they require decisive action, measurable results, and genuine accountability.

If the government is unable to guarantee the security of its citizens and reverse the worsening situation, then every option associated with political responsibility—including resignation—should not be considered beyond discussion. In mature democracies, accountability is not a sign of weakness; it is a demonstration of respect for the people and the institutions of governance.

The safety of Nigerian children, the freedom of our schools, and the protection of innocent lives must remain a national priority. The nation deserves leadership that delivers security, restores confidence, and places the welfare of its citizens above all else. Until that happens, calls for accountability will only continue to grow louder.
