INEC can never truly conduct free and fair elections as long as it remains dependent on the executive arm of government.

The President nominates the INEC Chairman, while political loyalists often find their way into key positions across the electoral system. Meanwhile, the National Assembly—whose members benefit from the existing arrangement—has little incentive to enact laws that would make INEC genuinely independent.

A democracy is only as strong as the independence of its electoral institutions. Until Nigeria establishes a truly autonomous electoral commission, free and fair elections will remain more of an aspiration than a reality.

Without electoral independence, the people's will can never be fully protected.
