International travellers could soon face significantly higher costs and stricter requirements as both the United States and Japan introduce major changes to their visa systems. The US State Department is set to launch a pilot programme from July 1 offering an expedited visa interview service for business and tourist applicants. The optional premium service will cost $750 on top of the standard $185 application fee, bringing the total to $935, and promises interview appointments within 10 days at selected embassies and consulates.

The move comes amid growing complaints over lengthy visa processing delays linked to tighter immigration measures under the Trump administration. Meanwhile, Japan has approved its first visa fee increase in nearly five decades, raising single-entry visa costs by 400% and significantly increasing fees for residency changes, extensions and permanent residency applications. Japanese authorities say the new charges are necessary to address rising administrative costs, inflation and the country's growing foreign resident population.
