NNEKA'S DIARY XXV

A week before our wedding, I finally sat down with Priscilla at her home.

"I need to know," I said. "What happened between you and Angela? Why the indifference towards her, even unto death?"

She was quiet for a long time. Then she started talking.

"We were friends. Close friends. University. Same department. Same hostel."

"I didn't know that."

"Nobody did. After what happened, I mourned the relationship and buried it."

She told me everything. How Angela started finding excuses to be around Philip. How she dressed differently whenever he was coming. How she came to "comfort" him the night Priscilla and Philip had a fight. How she went as far as going naked in front of Philip.

"She didn't succeed," Priscilla said. "Philip shut it down. But she tried. And that was enough."

"So you cut her off."

"Completely. But I couldn't escape her. She married Kunle. And because Kunle and Philip were best friends, we were forced to be in the same rooms. Same parties. Same gatherings. Smiling. Pretending."

"Is that why you didn't cry at her burial?"

Priscilla wiped her eyes. "I didn't wish her dead. I would never wish death on anyone. But I couldn't bring myself to mourn her either. Not after what she tried to do to my marriage. Now that I think of it, I feel bad."

Tears dropped from her eyes.

"You and Philip were already married?" I asked.

"We were engaged and planning the wedding. Her action made me put things on hold for about a year, to be sure of the man I was marrying. But Philip proved to be a real man. We resumed the preparations, and here we are — with my twins turning teenagers this year. She almost made me lose one of the most amazing men on earth."

She looked at me, her voice breaking.

"Am I a bad person?"

I held her hand.

"Thank you for telling me."

"I've been carrying that for years," she whispered. "It feels lighter now."

"You're not the same person you were. None of us are."

She smiled. "How did you become so wise?"

"Life experiences. God. And Mrs. Chucks."

We both laughed.
