Sickle cell disorder can affect all the cranial nerves (cranial nerves I to XII),
Although affecting all the cranial nerves simultaneously is rare.
Sickle cell disorder affects the cranial nerves:
1. When the sickled red blood cells block the blood supply to the cranial nerves during vaso-occlusive crises.
2. When infarction affects the bony canals through which the cranial nerves run their course.
3. When a stroke (caused by sickle cell disorder) affects the cranial nerves.
