Why Africa Struggles to Move Forward
Our forefathers fought for independence believing that Africans could govern themselves and build prosperous nations. More than half a century later, many of us must honestly ask: have we lived up to that responsibility?
In Nigeria, we have allowed corruption, incompetence, and misplaced priorities to weaken our institutions. Leaders travel abroad for medical treatment because they failed to build world-class hospitals at home. Public funds are stolen and hidden in foreign countries while citizens struggle with poverty and insecurity. We spend billions on luxury for the political class while basic services remain unavailable to ordinary people.
Perhaps most troubling is our lack of confidence in ourselves. Too often, a Nigerian entrepreneur is considered more credible if accompanied by a foreign partner. Too often, our leaders seek validation from outsiders rather than earning the trust and respect of their own people.
The problem is not that Africans cannot govern themselves. The problem is that too many of those entrusted with leadership have placed personal interests above national development. Until accountability replaces entitlement and service replaces self-interest, progress will remain slow.
Africa's future will not be determined in foreign capitals. It will be determined by Africans who demand better leadership, stronger institutions, and a commitment to building nations that work for their own people. The responsibility is ours, and so is the opportunity.
