In 1988, a scientist named Tommy Thompson made a discovery that captured the world's attention. After years of searching, he found the wreck of the SS Central America, a ship that had sunk in the Atlantic Ocean in 1857. The ship was carrying a huge amount of gold from the California Gold Rush and had been lost for more than a century.

The discovery was considered one of the greatest treasure finds in history. Many investors had helped pay for the expensive search and expected to receive a share of the treasure. The recovered gold was worth tens of millions of dollars, and the find brought Thompson fame and success.

However, problems soon began. In 2005, several investors sued Thompson, claiming they had not received the money they were promised. As legal battles continued, questions arose about missing gold coins and where some of the treasure had gone.
In 2012, before he was due to appear in court, Thompson suddenly disappeared. For years, nobody knew where he was. He became a fugitive and remained on the run until 2015, when authorities found him living in a hotel in Florida.

After his arrest, a judge ordered him to explain what happened to about 500 missing gold coins. Thompson refused to reveal their location. He claimed the coins had been placed in a trust in Belize and that much of the money had already been spent on loans and legal expenses.

Because he would not provide answers, he remained in prison for about ten years. In March 2026, Thompson was finally released. Yet the mystery remains unsolved, and the missing gold coins have never been found.
