There was an old innkeeper whose gentle words made strangers feel at home. One evening, a traveler asked, "Sir, whence cometh such kindness?"

The old man paused and replied, "From lonely nights, unanswered prayers, and mercies I did not deserve."

Then he added with a smile, "The hand that bindeth wounds usually beareth scars of its own."
