Who Is Working Harder?

On a busy Monday morning in Lagos, Ada and Tunde started their day before sunrise. Ada, a bank manager and mother of two, woke up at 5:00 a.m. She prepared breakfast, got her children ready for school, cleaned part of the house, and then rushed to work. After spending eight hours handling customers and meetings, she returned home, helped the children with homework, cooked dinner, and finished office reports late into the night.

Tunde, her neighbor, also had a full-time job. However, after work, he usually relaxed with friends, watched football, and left most household responsibilities to his wife. He often argued that earning money was enough contribution from a man.

One evening, a discussion started among residents of their neighborhood. Some people pointed to Ada's routine and said that many women today carry both professional and domestic responsibilities. They argued that women are working harder than some men because they often balance careers, childcare, household duties, and community obligations at the same time.

Others disagreed. They argued that many men still work extremely hard in demanding jobs, construction sites, factories, farms, and businesses. They said it was unfair to compare all men and women based on a few examples.

As the debate continued, everyone agreed on one thing: hard work is not determined by gender alone. However, the increasing number of women successfully managing careers and family responsibilities has led many people to believe that women are working harder than some men in modern society.

The question remains open: Are women truly working harder than some men nowadays, or are people simply noticing and appreciating women's contributions more than before?
