Your Excellencies, Esteemed Government of Ghana, 240 million Nigerians are writing to express strong support for Ghana's leadership in advancing global discussions on slavery reparations, especially following the recent landmark conference and the United Nations' recognition of the transatlantic slave trade as one of the gravest crimes against humanity.

Your efforts to translate moral acknowledgment into concrete, practical commitments are both timely and necessary. Many across Africa and the diaspora believe that reparations must move beyond symbolic gestures and toward measurable justice for the millions of lives stolen, exploited, and irreversibly harmed.

As you continue this work, we urge the Government of Ghana to consider firm, strategic measures that reinforce the seriousness of Africa's position. One such measure is reassessing the export of Africa's mineral resources and rare earth materials to nations that refuse to engage meaningfully in reparations discussions. These resources have long powered the wealth of the Western world, and they remain essential to modern industries. Leveraging them responsibly could strengthen Africa's negotiating power.

Additionally, it is crucial that any reparations intended for African populations reach the people directly. Many citizens across the continent, including the 240 million people of Nigeria, have expressed deep mistrust in their governments' ability to manage such funds transparently. To ensure reparations fulfill their purpose, we encourage Ghana to champion mechanisms that deliver compensation directly to individuals—such as secure digital payment systems or mobile alerts—rather than through government intermediaries. This approach would help prevent corruption and ensure that reparations uplift the communities most affected by the legacy of slavery.

Ghana's leadership has already inspired global attention. By continuing to advocate boldly and by prioritizing transparency, justice, and the empowerment of African people, Ghana can help shape a new chapter in the global pursuit of historical accountability.
