The Panel Just Asked About Your Career Gap. Your Hands Are Sweating. Here Is The Exact Answer That Turns A 0 Into A 3.
Career gaps are common.
Among internationally trained healthcare professionals, they are almost universal.
The gap between completing training in your home country and completing PLAB. The gap while waiting for NMC registration. The gap during OET preparation. The gap while a family situation required your presence. The gap between the end of one role and the start of another.
Every panel knows this. No experienced NHS hiring panel in 2026 is shocked by a career gap for an IMG.
What they are assessing is not the gap itself.
They are assessing three things:
One — Were you honest about it? Attempting to conceal a gap in an NHS interview — where employment dates are verified against reference checks and visa records — is a professional integrity concern. Honesty, even about an uncomfortable period, scores higher than evasion every time.
Two — Did you maintain professional engagement during the gap? Not employment. Professional engagement. Online CPD. NHS e-Learning modules. Professional journal reading. Language preparation. Clinical attachment. Voluntary work. Any structured professional activity during the gap — however informal — is evidence of commitment.
Three — Is the gap explained or unexplained? An explained gap — even one involving personal circumstances — is professionally manageable. An unexplained gap — where the dates simply do not add up and no context is provided — signals something the panel will probe further.
The complete answer structure:
Acknowledge it directly. "You will note from my application that there is a period between [date] and [date] that I want to address directly."
Explain it honestly and briefly. One or two sentences. No over-explanation.
Evidence the professional engagement. Name specific activities. Courses. Modules. Preparation.
Bridge forward. "I am now fully ready to commit to this role — and the preparation I undertook during that period has, if anything, strengthened my understanding of the NHS context I am entering."
