Juneteenth is holiday observed annually on June 19, commemorating the end of slavery in the United States.

A combination of the words June and nineteenth, the holiday, also called Freedom Day, has been celebrated since 1866 and is considered to be one of the oldest continuing African American holidays. On June 17, 2021, President Joe Biden signed a legislation to make Juneteenth a federal holiday.

At the end of the Civil War in the United States, though slavery was technically illegal in all states, it still persisted in the last bastions of the Confederacy. This was the case when Union General Gordon Granger marched his troops into Galveston, Texas on June 19th and announced that all enslaved people there were officially free.
