Abia State Governor, Dr Alex C. Otti , OFR, yesterday in Lagos presided over the unveiling of two newly acquired Boeing 737-800NG aircraft by United Nigeria Airlines, christened in honour of two illustrious sons of the South East, the legendary author of Things Fall Apart, Professor Chinua Achebe, and the revered Obi of Onitsha, His Royal Majesty Igwe Alfred Nnaemeka Achebe, CFR.
The ceremony, held at Nesto Aviation Services (NESTAV), Gate 4 Access Road, Local Airport, Ikeja, provided an opportunity for Governor Otti to commend the Chairman and Founder of United Nigeria Airlines, Prof. Obiora Okonkwo, for celebrating icons whose contributions have brought pride to Nigeria, noting that societies that honour excellence inevitably attract honour upon themselves.
Governor Otti also applauded the Honourable Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr Festus Keyamo, SAN, for pursuing reforms that are strengthening indigenous carriers and encouraging greater private sector participation in the aviation ecosystem. He particularly welcomed the proposed aircraft leasing initiative, describing it as a practical intervention that would improve the bargaining strength and sustainability of local operators.
The Governor equally acknowledged the Federal Government's support towards the Abia Airport project, revealing that work on the runway is progressing steadily and expressing confidence that Abia would soon emerge as a strategic destination for airlines, including United Nigeria Airlines.
Earlier, Prof. Obiora Okonkwo attributed the airline's expansion to renewed confidence in the sector, while explaining that the decision to immortalise Chinua Achebe and Igwe Alfred Achebe was inspired by their enduring legacies in literature, leadership and national service.
In his remarks, Minister Festus Keyamo disclosed that Governor Otti's insistence on upgrading the proposed Abia airstrip into a full-fledged airport, backed by the State's commitment to counterpart funding, had significantly accelerated the project's progress, assuring that the Federal Government would soon begin funding additional airport infrastructure.
The occasion also featured goodwill messages from the Obi of Onitsha, who described the honour as deeply meaningful, and from Dr Allen Onyema, Chairman of Air Peace, who praised Governor Otti's achievements in Abia and described him as a shining example of visionary leadership in contemporary Nigeria.
Highlights of the ceremony included the presentation of plaques to distinguished personalities by Governor Otti, his own recognition by Igwe Alfred Achebe, and the formal unveiling of the two aircraft in the presence of the Director-General of Civil Aviation and Chief Executive Officer of the NCAA, Captain Chris Ona Najomo, Dr Uju Ifejika, royal fathers, business leaders and other eminent Nigerians
