One of the biggest surprises in my career was discovering the point where nobody fully understands the entire system anymore.

Not because people aren't capable.

Not because documentation is missing.

But because the system has simply become too large.

Early in my career, I thought scale was about:

More users
More transactions
More servers

I was wrong.

The harder problem is complexity.

While leading large-scale payment and financial platforms, I learned that the biggest challenges were rarely technical.

The real challenge was alignment.

Alignment between:

Engineering
Finance
Operations
Core Banking
Business Stakeholders

One of the most valuable lessons came from working on an international money transfer platform where settlement, finance, reporting, customer experience, and core banking systems all had to behave as a single ecosystem.

Customers experienced one platform.

Behind the scenes, multiple teams, systems, priorities, and assumptions had to align.

That's when I realized something that fundamentally changed how I think about architecture:

The larger the system becomes, the less important individual components become.

The more important the relationships between them become.

Great architects don't spend all their time optimizing components.

They spend their time optimizing interactions.

Because at scale, architecture becomes less about technology and more about coordination.
