Your NHS Interview Is Over. You Do Not Know If You Got The Job Yet. Here Is What To Do In The Next 24 Hours That Changes Your Next Application — Whether You Got This One Or Not.
Most people leave an NHS interview and do one of two things.
They either replay every answer in their head and convince themselves they either definitely got it or definitely did not.
Or they close the door on it entirely and wait for the email.
Both of those are the wrong use of the next 24 hours.
Here is the post-interview debrief framework I give every client — to be completed within 24 hours of every NHS interview, regardless of outcome.
Step 1 — Write down every question asked. Word for word. From memory.
Do this immediately. Before you speak to anyone. Before you read your notes. The act of writing them down fresh is itself a preparation exercise — it tells you which questions you were prepared for and which ones caught you off guard.
Step 2 — Score your own answers against the person specification.
For each question, write: which essential criterion was this testing? What did I say? Would I score that a 1, 2, 3, or 4? Why?
This is not self-criticism. It is self-assessment. The same process the panel just completed — but in your favour.
Step 3 — Identify the one answer you would change.
Every interview has one. The answer where you drifted off the STAR structure. Where you said "we" when you needed "I." Where you gave the concept instead of the evidence. Write it down. Write the answer you would give now. That is the gap your next preparation session closes.
Step 4 — Write down what you learned about the Trust from the panel's questions.
What did their questions tell you about their current clinical governance priorities? Their service pressures? Their leadership culture? This intelligence is gold for your next application — to this Trust or another.
Step 5 — Send a professional follow-up email within 24 hours.
Not to beg for the job. To confirm your interest and demonstrate professionalism.
Three sentences. "Thank you for your time. I remain very interested in this post. I would welcome the opportunity to discuss my application further if that would be helpful."
That email is on record. It signals follow-through.
