Today is the International Day for Countering Hate Speech. Established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2021, the day aims to promote intercultural dialogue, combat discrimination, and tackle the rising global challenge of hate speech amplified by digital platforms.

Hate speech is a powerful force that fuels division, fear, and violence—but it can be challenged through empathy, education, and action. In Brazil, teacher Carla saw how harmful stereotypes were affecting her students and responded by teaching empathy and tolerance, transforming her classroom into a space of respect and unity. In India, journalist Ahmed launched an online campaign to counter hate speech targeting religious minorities, using storytelling to inspire thousands toward acceptance. Their stories remind us that no matter where we are, we all have the power to speak up and create a more inclusive world.

Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide, United Nations Under-Secretary-General Chaloka Beyani, shared the following speech:

"On this International Day, I call on all of you to do the utmost to tackle the scourge of hate speech globally. To restate our commitment to human rights and to the United Nations Charter.

To prohibit any propaganda for war.

To condemn all propaganda and all organizations which are based on ideas or theories of superiority of race or groups of persons based on color or ethnic origin.

To prohibit any advocacy of national, racial or religious hatred that constitutes incitement to discrimination, hostility or violence.

To declare as an offence punishable by law all dissemination of ideas based on racial superiority or hatred, incitement to racial discrimination as well as acts of violence against any race or group of persons of another identity or origin.

Because countering hate speech starts with each of us.

With me. With you. And with the partnerships we make. "
