Why is malaria often more severe in people with AA genotype?

Here’s the genetic logic:

1. *AA genotype* → Normal red blood cells. No built-in protection. Malaria parasite _Plasmodium falciparum_ enters, multiplies fast, and causes severe disease. This is why AA people must be extra careful with prevention.

2. *AS genotype* → Sickle cell trait. Nature’s defense. When the parasite infects the red cell, the cell sickles and gets destroyed faster by the spleen. Parasite dies with it. Result: milder malaria, lower parasite load. Science calls this “heterozygote advantage”.

3. *SS genotype* → Sickle cell disease. This is NOT protection. SS patients face double danger: malaria + their own fragile blood cells. Malaria triggers crises, severe anemia, and higher risk of death. SS = highest risk group.

Simple summary:
*AA* = No protection → Severe malaria risk
*AS* = Protection → Milder malaria
*SS* = High risk → Malaria + sickle cell crisis

Political logic of health: Knowledge saves lives. If you know your genotype, you know your malaria strategy. Test. Prevent. Treat early.
