NNEKA'S DIARY XIX

The first month without Kunle was hard. The second month was harder.

We spoke every day — video calls, voice notes, long text messages that sometimes turned into arguments about silly things (like whether plantain should be fried or roasted, I'm team fried, by the way).

He sent me pictures of Dubai: the tall buildings, the desert, a random cat he found near his hotel.

I sent him pictures of Lagos: the chaotic market, Grace sleeping with her mouth open, and Mary's drawing that Priscilla brought to my office.

Priscilla. That was another strange development.

She had become... friendly. Not in a fake way, but genuinely. She invited me to her home for lunch twice. She asked about my weekend. She even defended me when Oga tried to pile extra work on my desk.

One day, I decided to ask her.

"Priscilla, why are you being so nice to me?"

She paused, then smiled. "Because I was wrong about you."

"Wrong, how?"

She sat down across me. "I judged you. I assumed that because you were single, there must be something wrong with you. But then I saw how you handled yourself at the burial. How you didn't throw yourself at Kunle. How you respected Angela even though you never met her." She shook her head. "I'm ashamed of the person I used to be. I'm trying to change."

I didn't know what to say. So I just reached across the table and squeezed her hand.

"Thank you," I said. "That means more than you know."

She smiled. "Don't thank me yet. I still talk too much."

We both laughed.

That night, I called Kunle and told him about the conversation.

"Philip's wife is complicated," he said. "But she has a good heart. It just takes her time to warm up to people."

At that point, I remembered Priscilla's indifference towards Angela — even unto death. I needed answers, but I decided to ask Priscilla someday, since we were now on friendly terms.
