Inspiring Mathematicians 19: Thabit ibn Qurra

Thabit ibn Qurra was an Arab mathematician, astronomer, physician, and translator who lived from 826 to 901 CE and was one of the leading scholars of the Islamic Golden Age.

Born in Harran, in present-day Turkey, he made significant contributions to geometry, number theory, algebra, and astronomy while working in Baghdad's renowned House of Wisdom.

Thabit expanded upon the works of Greek mathematicians such as Euclid, Archimedes, and Apollonius, translating and preserving many classical texts while also producing important original research.

In number theory, he developed a theorem related to amicable numbers and explored properties of integers that influenced later mathematicians.

His work helped bridge ancient Greek mathematics and the scientific advancements of the Islamic world, ensuring the preservation and further development of mathematical knowledge for future generations.
