HIV AND CO-INFECTIONS EXPLAINED

When people hear HIV, they often think HIV alone is the problem. But one thing many people don’t know is that other infections can become more dangerous when they happen together with HIV — this is called co-infection.

A co-infection happens when a person has HIV and another infection at the same time, such as Tuberculosis (TB), sexually transmitted infections (STIs), hepatitis, or other infections.

Why does this matter?

HIV can weaken the immune system, making it harder for the body to fight off other infections. At the same time, some infections can increase inflammation in the body and make HIV more difficult to manage if left untreated.

This doesn’t mean everyone living with HIV will automatically get co-infections. It means regular health checks, early testing, and proper treatment are important.

Common signs that should not be ignored:
✔️ Persistent cough
✔️ Unexplained weight loss
✔️ Fever that keeps returning
✔️ Night sweats
✔️ Unusual discharge or sores
✔️ Feeling sick for a long time

Knowledge is powerful. The earlier infections are detected, the better the chances of staying healthy.
