NNEKA'S DIARY XVIII

Kunle left for Dubai on a Monday morning. He called me from the airport.

"I wish you were here," he said.

"You'll be fine. Two months will fly by."

"Will you miss me?"

I wanted to say something casual, something cool. But instead, the truth came out.

"Every single day."

He was quiet for a moment. "Nneka... when I get back, there's something I want to ask you. Something important."

My heart stopped. "What is it?"

"If I tell you now, it won't be the same. Just... wait for me. Can you do that?"

I nodded before realizing he couldn't see me. "I'll wait."

"Thank you, my lady."

The line went dead, and I stood there holding my phone like an idiot.

What does he want to ask me?

Grace found me in the kitchen an hour later, staring into an open fridge.

"Sis, the yogurt is not going to jump into your mouth. Close the door."

I closed it and leaned against the counter. "Grace, he said he wants to ask me something important when he returns."

"Like... a proposal?"

"I don't know. Maybe. But it's too soon, right? We've only really known each other for a few months."

Grace grabbed an apple from the fruit basket. "Sis, people date for ten years and still get divorced. Other people marry after three months and stay together forever. There's no formula. The only question is: do you trust him?"

Do I trust him?

I thought about everything. The way he looked at me. The way he spoke about Angela with respect, not bitterness. The way he was willing to wait a full year to mourn before properly courting me.

"Yes," I said finally. "I think I do."

"Then stop overthinking and let God write your story."

I threw a dish towel at her. "Since when did you become a pastor?"

She caught it and laughed. "Since my big sister started acting confused."

She said it and ran — and I ran after her…

To be continued…

David Onyedikachi: I can see clearly here that Nneka is quite and overthinker in this relationship. Every small gesture from Kunle — a delayed text reply, or even the way he smiled at his phone would trigger a cascade of internal questions. Did I say something wrong earlier? Is he losing interest? What if he's compar...
Comfort Yako Asala: Nneka my dear heroine is self-aware but cautious. The conversations are becoming both intense and honest.

Her love interest with Kunle respects boundaries without insisting on responses and replies however that leaves only options to assume and probably daydream to a point of being unaware of her...
AOJ: A enthralling episode, as usual. The plot is thickening and developing fast. At the point you think the story is approaching a denoument, it pivots completely. Every bit of Nneka's Diary leaves you asking for more, like Oliver Twist.
