The Federal Government has dismissed reports suggesting plans to introduce new taxes on telecommunications services and petroleum products, insisting such claims do not reflect its current policy direction. According to the Ministry of Finance, recommendations contained in the IMF's Article IV Consultation Report are advisory and not binding on Nigeria. The government clarified that the VAT waiver on fuel remains in place, while any fuel surcharge would require a formal ministerial order and gazette publication-steps it says are not being considered. It also noted that the telecommunications excise duty introduced before 2023 has been repealed under the country's new tax laws. Reassuring citizens and businesses, the government said it: priority is boosting revenue through economic growth, improved administration, investment attraction and job creation rather than imposing additional tax burdens.
