If You Are An HCA, Nursing Assistant, Or Healthcare Support Worker And You Are Planning To Stay In The UK — Read This Before December 2026.
This is not a general advice post.
This is a specific, time-sensitive alert for Band 2, Band 3, and Band 4 healthcare support workers — HCAs, nursing auxiliaries, clinical support workers — who are currently in the UK or planning to apply.
The Immigration Salary List ends in December 2026.
And the government's proposed higher skills threshold — RQF Level 6, degree-level qualification and above — if implemented as planned, means that Band 3 and Band 4 roles may no longer be eligible for new overseas sponsorship beyond that date.
Here is what that means in practical terms for healthcare support workers.
If you are already in the UK on a Health and Care Visa in a Band 3 or Band 4 role: Your transitional protections depend on when your CoS was issued.
Workers with continuous permission from a CoS assigned before 22 July 2025 have transitional arrangements. But those arrangements do not last indefinitely. When you come to renew, the rules in place at that point apply — not the rules under which you originally entered.
If you are overseas and planning to use the Health and Care Visa route for a Band 3 or Band 4 clinical support role: The window is narrowing. The six months between now and December 2026 matter more than any other period in your UK career planning.
If you are already here and you want to protect your long-term UK position: The most powerful thing you can do right now is pursue a qualification or registration pathway that takes you above the skills threshold.
NVQ Level 3 to nursing associate. Nursing associate to registered nurse. Healthcare science pathway. Apprenticeship route. The Band 5 registered nurse going rate — approximately £28,407 — currently sits above the Health and Care Visa minimum. The route there is structured, supported, and available.
If you are a Band 5 nurse or Band 6 AHP supporting a colleague in a Band 3 or 4 role: Tell them about this post. The people who most need this information are often the least likely to have access to it.
