Inspiring Mathematicians 18: Muhammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi

Muhammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi was a Persian mathematician, astronomer, and scholar who lived around 780–850 CE and is widely regarded as the "Father of Algebra."

Working at the House of Wisdom in Baghdad during the Islamic Golden Age, he wrote Al-Kitab al-Mukhtasar fi Hisab al-Jabr wal-Muqabala ("The Compendious Book on Calculation by Completion and Balancing"), a groundbreaking work that systematically explained methods for solving linear and quadratic equations.

The term "algebra" is derived from the word al-jabr in the title of this book, while the word "algorithm" originates from the Latinized form of his name. Al-Khwarizmi also played a key role in introducing Hindu-Arabic numerals and decimal positional notation to the Islamic world, helping to transform mathematics globally.

His works profoundly influenced mathematical thought in the Middle East, Africa, and Europe, making him one of the most important figures in the history of mathematics.
