What if I told you that the illness that kills the most people with HIV is not HIV itself?

Imagine someone living their normal life, maybe feeling weak, coughing a little, thinking it’s just a simple chest infection. Weeks pass, the cough doesn’t stop, weight starts dropping, night sweats begin… but they ignore it, hoping it will go away.

Here’s the truth: Tuberculosis (TB) is the most common opportunistic infection in people living with HIV.
When HIV weakens the immune system, the body becomes unable to fight TB bacteria effectively. That’s why TB can move faster and become more dangerous in someone with HIV.

Many people think TB and HIV are the same disease or always appear together.
But that’s false.
TB can affect anyone, but HIV increases your risk of developing active TB if you’re exposed.

The important thing is this: early testing saves lives.
If someone has HIV, regular TB screening is necessary. And if you have persistent cough, fever, or weight loss, don’t ignore it—get checked early.
